As we speak today in 2015, machine learning is transforming the world by enabling machines to do all sorts of 'intelligent' tasks such as understanding images, human speech, predicting preferences and many others. With tremendous amount of data, interconnectedness and huge processing power in small devices, machines are doing things which were not anticipated until recently. While, on the other hand, machines are still unable to do some tasks which humans (or even animals) do effortlessly. There is a renewed (though seemingly periodic) fear that machines will take jobs of humans - leaving only the very highly skilled in the job marketplace. Also, for the first time, some experts in AI/ML whisper fears of machines challenging the human civilization!
Whatever the future may hold, currently machine learning is creating new efficiencies in the marketplace, leading to new business models, which did not exist before. Even current businesses are relying more and more on data and the predictor power associated with building models -- those who aren't are losing their competitive edge. Also, new machine learning techniques together with neurosciences is also helping us understand better, the probable basis and mechanism of intelligence.
In some way, it has never been so exciting! Is India participating in the excitement and the innovation? Yes, it is, but there is a lot more to happen. The good news is that young folks across the country are excited about machine learning and data sciences. This is a place, an effort, towards catalyzing the machine learning ecosystem in India, involving all -- students, researchers, institutions and corporations. And above all, everyone whose lives will be impacted by machine learning in the coming years.
With hope towards a buzzing machine learning community in India - both in theory and practice.
